The Botswana UPenn Partnership is collaboration between the Botswana government, the University of Botswana & the University of Pennsylvania, which aims to improve clinical care, advance research & enrich academic life. Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the following position:
Job title:
Laboratory Technologist (Research)
Reports to: Principle Investigator (PI-Research)
Duration: 6 months minimum with possibility of extension
Position purpose: Primary purpose will be to carry out molecular microbiologic assays on specimens submitted as part of clinical research studies, based in Gaborone
Key performance areas include (but are not limited to) the following:
1. Strict adherence to all laboratory protocols and bio safety measures
2. Implementation of quality control and assurance measures
3. Recording any changes or deviations from protocol in an appropriate manner
4. Maintenance of an organized laboratory space, specimen manifests and records that are accessible to other BUP laboratory personnel
5. High quality laboratory work (e.g. molecular assays), as assessed by other laboratory experts
6. Acquisition and maintenance of necessary reagents and supplies (i.e. inventory control)
7. Shinning of samples including (a) Timely preparation of shinning manifests and required documentation; (b) communicating with PI and other BUP personnel regarding shipment progress and tracking
Position requirements:
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or MLT degree/diploma in laboratory/medical technology or related biomedical science is required
Experienced:
Two (2) years experience working as a laboratory medical or research technologist with experience in performing basic molecular and /or microbiologic assays. Level IV English (fluent both written and spoken)
Must have basic concepts and procedures of medical or research technology with specialized knowledge of molecular assays (i.e. real time PCR)
Ability to operate and calibrate laboratory instruments and accurately enter laboratory data into computerized databases is required
Registration with Botswana health professional council is a prerequisite
