Vacancy: Director, Department Of Environmental Affairs

Salary scale: E1-(P 349, 704-P363, 840 per annum)

Benefits:

i)Optional contributory medical aid scheme (government pays 50% and employee pays 50%).
ii)Contributory pension scheme for permanent and pensionable staff (government pays 15% and employee pays 5%)
iii)For new entrants into the public service, a contract of 24-36 months with gratuity payable at the rate of 25% upon expiry of contact.

Leave: 30 working days per annum.

Qualifications: degree in environmental sciences/ natural resources management field

Experience:

A minimum of sixteen (16) years relevant work experience in the field of environmental management/ conservation, at least 2 years of which should have been served as deputy director E2 salary grade in government or equivalent in the private sector or parastatal organization.

Main purpose of the job
Provide policy direction and strategic leadership in all matters pertaining to environment and natural resources and other functions supporting the smooth operation of the department.

Key performance areas

1.Guides all sectorial ministries departments, local authorities, parastatals and other organisations on the conservation and protection of the environment in order to achieve sustainable development.
2.Oversee stakeholder involvement in environmental policy and legislation formulation, implementation and review.
3.Installs effective systems for implementation and promotion of the national conservation strategy and action plan throughout Botswana and for publishing its achievements with view to changing public attitudes towards, and perceptions of, natural resources conservation for development.
4.Acts as chief advisor to government on environmental issues.
5.Liaise with and supports non-governmental organisations (NGOS) which undertake conservation and environmental projects at village, district and national level and those NGOS which entail environmental enhancement.
6.Promotes national and international cooperation and networking in matters of environmental management.
7.Develops and reviews, goals, objectives, functions and an appropriate structure for the department to facilitate effective implementation of the national conservation strategy and management of the country’s environment and natural resources.
8. Develops and introduces appropriate management tools in order to improve productivity and general efficiency within the department.
9.Oversees the national environmental assessment and reporting process to ensure that it is aligned to regional and international standards and is adaptable to changes.
