Vacancy: Chief Geologist x1 post
Applications are invited from suitably qualified citizens of Botswana for the post of Chief Geologist at the Department of mines, Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources.
Salary scale: D1 (P241 704-P266 844) per annum
Leave: 30 working days per annum
Benefits:
(i) Optional contributory aid scheme
(Government pays 50% and employee pays 50%)
(ii) Contributory pension fund (government pays 15% and employee pays 5%
Qualification
Degree in Geology
Experience
A minimum of 8 years working in the field of Geology
Main purpose of the job:
The primary purpose of the ELD is to process applications for the prospecting license mineral concession and monitor operations of the concession to ensure compliance with the minerals legislation standards and programmes.
Core areas of responsibilities:
? Make recommendations on issuing renewing modifications and cancellation of exploration licenses
? Reviewing Auditing and evaluation of exploration programs ranging from grass-roots to feasibility studies covering a wide variety of mineral commodities and geological environments
? Reviewing prospecting licences agreements to monitor planned exploration programs rental payments and expenditure commitments.
? Ensure compliance of mineral prospecting rights holders to the provision of the Mineral Act.
? Offer advice and geological information to potential investors on prospect of mineral investments and promotion in Botswana.
? Review exploration philosophy and techniques for the betterment of the exploration activities
? Administer acts and legislation that govern exploration of mineral resources and also give direction on same.
? Conduct ongoing monitoring of compliance with license agreements through regular operational and financial audits of licenses
? Publish reports and bulletins on monitoring for information to stakeholders on performance of licensed exploration activities, and expected trend thereof.
? Monitors explosives activities and facilities for compliance with legislation at the time of licensing and during operation through inspections and audits of explosives activities and facilities
? Evaluates explosives permit and licence applications, examines blastering license candidates and issues respective permits and licences that an inspector of explosives can issue under the explosives act.
? Conducts investigations of accidents involving explosives and incidents of illegal handing of explosives, makes recommendations to holder for the prevention of similar accident and incidents and takes penal actions according to the Explosives act.
? Evaluates applications for authorization of explosives and registration of explosives firms and makes recommendations to Chief inspector of explosives to accept or reject.
? Oversees activities of Central explosives registry and generates reports for study and analysis of the explosives activities and their trends and patterns.
? Develops databases for central explosives registry, explosives permits and licences authorized explosives and registered firms
? Develops procedures for maintenance of records for bolstering licences, explosives magazines and authorization of explosives and registration of explosives firms
? Undertake explosives related technical investigations or research
