Vacancy: Deputy Secretary for Legislative Drafting (F2)

Ref: AA 2/5/4 VI
The Attorney General’s Chamber is an extra ministerial department under the ministry of defence, justice and security. It exists to prosecute all criminal cases at the public instance; prosecute, defend or settle civil cases on behalf of government, draft legislation; produce law reports; negotiate and draft commercial and international agreements and provide sound legal advice to Government.

Applications are invited for the above position in the attorney general’s chambers.
Salary Scale: F2 (P398, 808.00) per annum
Leave: 30 Working days per annum
Benefits: Optional contributory medical aid scheme. Contributory pension fund (government pays 15% employee pays 5%).

For direct entrants, employment will be on a twenty-four (24) to thirty six (36) months contract.

Robe allowance: P2, 283.60 per annum
Scarce Skill Allowance: 35% of basic salary
Qualifications: must have Bachelor of laws
Experience: At least fourteen (14) years experience in legislate drafting.

The primary purpose of the job: To draft complex legislation, edit the Botswana gazette, provide legal advice to client ministries; and perform managerial duties

Key performance areas:

The officer at this level is held accountable for the following principal outcome:
• Laws of Botswana
• Legal advice
• Promotes good governance in the drafting of legislation
• Promotion of democracy and rule of law in giving of legal advice
Core duties
The officer at this level performs the following core duties:
(i) Edits the government gazette
(ii) Conducts legal research
(iii) Drafts non complex legislation/opinion
(iv) Vets drafting manuals and guidelines
(v) Coordinates divisional reports and prepares MPIC reports
